Make Math Meaningful
This is my 30th year in Education! I am a passionate educator and lifelong learner, striving to discover and teach meaningful mathematics. I consider it an honor to support and guide my students as they pursue their careers in education. In teaching, my goal is always to encourage student individuality while motivating and inspiring. I believe, as stated in this quote by Plutarch, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Thus, regardless of the age of my students, I aim to provide quality learning opportunities about mathematical content, standards, strategies, and the principles that we reflect upon. These goals will be shared in my presentation
I recently earned my PhD in Mathematics Education from CU Denver after researching undergraduate college algebra instructors’ professional and productive dispositions toward teaching with technology and how their critical reflection practices led to transformative learning experiences. I am also an ASPIRE to Teach alternative licensure instructor and was a graduate research assistant for four years on the ITs CRITiCAL Project. I continue to encourage my teacher candidates and aspiring instructors to focus most on reasoning rather than right or wrong answers.
My travels worldwide have given me many different perspectives on life and learning. I have taught first grade through adults and am truly living my dream of inspiring others toward providing meaningful opportunities for education and student learning. Since I grew up in New Hampshire, I enjoy being back in the mountains here in CO, and I especially love the dry air! My fun and free time involves reading and nature. I love long walks, good books, Jeep drives, and growing flowers and plants.
