Latines are the largest ethnic/racial minority group in the U.S. yet data show significant disparities in high school graduation rates, college attendance and graduation. These statistics run counter to the strong emphasis in Latine culture on the importance of education, and demonstrate that several risk factors threaten and undermine Latine students’ academic achievement. Join Dr. Gustavo Carlo as he discusses his work and the importance of family, caregivers, and traditional Latine cultural values that enhance Latine youth health and wellbeing, and ultimately their academic outcomes, as well as the implications for policy and interventions.

Gustavo Carlo, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Education. His research interests include understanding positive social development and health in culturally-diverse children and adolescents — with many of his projects focused on ethnic/racial groups across the world and in U.S. Latino/a youth and families.
About Dr. Adriana Villavicencio
Adriana Villavicencio, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Education. Her research is focused on K-12 educational policy and school practices that deepen or disrupt inequities for minoritized communities of students and families.
