Traditionally mental health has been conceptualized through problem-focused paradigms, which cast school psychologists in the role of supporting mental health through individual and small group intervention. However, the understanding of mental health and the role of school psychologists has expanded beyond a problem-focused lens. Rather than thinking about mental health as the absence of problems, it can be thought of as the presence of healthy characteristics. School psychologists have the training to support mental health in a wide variety of ways. For example, school psychologists can engage in preventative activities, universal programs, and are able to work across systems of support. This presentation will discuss the evolving role of school psychologists as facilitators of mental health and consider the opportunities available in the changing landscape of practice.
