Presented by Dr. Evan Engle-Newman, PhD – candidate for Clinical (Open Rank, Assistant-Associate) Professor, for Counseling (COUN)
Relational Cultural Theory is a resurging approach to building growth-fostering relationships in our lives and in the counseling relationship. It focuses on social forces and how they influence our sense of self and connection or disconnection in relationships. The presentation will cover a brief history of Relational Cultural Therapy, its core tenets and concepts, its application to relationships inside and outside the counseling room, and will provide an opportunity to practice some of the concepts with other participants.
A brief bio for Dr. Evan Engle-Newman:
Evan Engle-Newman is currently finishing his third year as an Assistant Professor at Northern Arizona University. As a professor, he loves teaching classes on gender, sex and sexuality, play therapy, groups, and practicum. His clinical experience focuses on working with children, adolescents, queer clients, and adults navigating relationship challenges and grief. His dissertation focused on LGBTGEQ+ clients discussing consensual nonmonogamy (CNM) in therapy. He has owned a private practice in Colorado since 2015. He lives in Phoenix, AZ with his husband and their four children/pets. Lastly, he loves Colorado and is a native of Colorado Springs. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, playing volleyball, gayming, caring for plants, and cooking.
