Summary:
The meeting focused on leadership transitions, committee continuity, and reflections on the DEI committee’s role within SEHD. Chris Carcia and Caron Westland were announced as co-chairs for next year, while Rosanna Miller Salas from the tech team was introduced as the new staff representative. Members reflected on the importance of having a dedicated space for faculty and staff to share perspectives, discuss concerns openly, and recognize issues even when conversations do not immediately lead to action. Discussion also centered on strengthening community development, professionalism norms, a sense of belonging, and appreciation for staff work. The group also discussed how the committee might support faculty and graduate students navigating states and political climates that are misaligned with DEI values, acknowledged broader threats facing some academic programs and careers stemming from recent U.S. civil rights decisions, and discussed the role of university messaging in the current cultural and political climate. Additional topics included the process for creating a new SEHD committee, possible multi-year leadership transition models, Tom’s upcoming involvement with UCDALI, Erika’s upcoming Fulbright year in Spain, and an informal conversation about hobbies, especially gardening and horticulture.
