Faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the public welcome!

Presented by Dr. Casey Richardson, PhD, candidate for Assistant Teaching Professor, for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE)

This presentation will share an example of a teaching practice in which CLDE added endorsement students recorded their own language policies, and Dr. Richardson will reveal what surfaced when those policies were analyzed. The language policy textual data was deductively coded for student labels, orientations in language planning (Ruiz, 1984), and regimentations of linguistic categories e.g., constructions of academic/formal and home/informal language (Flores & Rosa, 2015) and was inductively coded for emergent themes. Discursive findings illuminated teachers’ beliefs about languages and language users, which raises questions for our consideration such as:  Who, if anyone, is responsible for affirming and sustaining CLD students’ cultures, identities, and languages? & How can we conspire to move beyond dichotomous framings and appropriateness-based approaches to language education?
