Faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the public welcome!
Presented by Crystal Marroquin, candidate for Assistant Professor, Tenure Track for Couple & Family Therapy (CFT)
In this presentation, I will outline my overarching goal to conduct research that highlights the community specific needs of underrepresented groups and describe actionable steps I have taken to engage in this work. These include: (1) engaging underserved communities in culturally relevant research, (2) defining therapist barriers to care and solutions when working with marginalized groups, and (3) exploring treatment modalities used by systemic therapists and determine how they can be adapted to meet the needs of modern-day clients and underrepresented groups.
A brief bio for Crystal Marroquin:
Crystal Marroquin is a doctoral candidate in the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Florida State University. She received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish from Texas Tech University where she then completed a master’s degree in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy. Her program of research centers on understanding power dynamics within romantic relationships and working with Hispanic and Latinx populations. She is also interested in Experiential Therapy, social justice, self of the therapist, and improving therapy retention rates within Hispanic communities. She has experience working with a variety of populations in different settings including the juvenile justice system. Throughout her clinical training, she has seen the need for more inclusive treatment for ethnic minorities. As a bilingual therapist, Crystal has served Spanish-speaking individuals, couples, and families by providing culturally relevant therapeutic services and translating treatment protocols. Through her continued research, she aims to address barriers for the Hispanic community by working to create inclusive and diverse resources for bilingual clients.
