On a webinar hosted by this national education think tank, participants discussed a movement of laws and policies broadly referred in education policy circles to as “Science of Reading” legislation, influenced by the need for solutions to declining reading proficiency scores. On this webinar, CU Denver professor of cultural and linguistically diverse education Ester de Jong represented the need to recognize that many students come to school with languages other than English, and to incorporate the oral language base they have developed into their home language into second-language acquisition teaching efforts.
