Student Committee Meeting Notes | 8/29/2016
Present: Manuel Espinosa, Robert Allen, Sandy Mondragon, Rich Argys.
We discussed the function of this committee and some issues that might come up this year (listed below).
We have no student appeals issues at present and scholarship awards will be in early spring (April or so).
1. We need a chairperson this year. Kara Viesca served last year.Please volunteer if you are willing to chair the committee OR nominate someone who might be able to do it.
2. Historically, this committee advises the Dean regarding student academic appeals and awards scholarship funds.
We understand that Honor Code issues for undergraduates will likely soon be handled at the university level rather than by individual colleges. Provost Nairn should approve (or not) that suggestion soon. If approved, undergraduate appeals will then likely be handled by a university-wide committee.
Doctoral level appeals are handled by the Graduate School.
That leaves MA appeals to our committee, but maybe only for the short term. If undergraduate appeals move to a university-wide committee, then SEHD’s Student Committee may be relieved of that responsibility altogether.
3. We discussed the possibility of a student or students sitting on the Student Committee. That move might depend on the Provost’s decision about moving appeals to university-wide committee and out of specific colleges.
4. Finally we considered the possibility of visiting with Dean Kantor this year about the function and purview of the Student Committee.
