Students Committee Meeting 10-3-16

Students Committee Notes | 10/3/2016

Present: Sandy Mondragon, Manuel Espinosa, Suzanne Adams, Elizabeth Steed, Rich Argys, Dean Kantor, Associate Dean Garrison-Wade

This meeting was to clarify the foci and purview of the committee for the 2016-17 year.

At present, there is some confusion campus-wide over which bodies, exactly, have final input into students’ appeals – especially regarding dismissal from programs. The university, the Graduate School specific schools and colleges, and specific programs within SEHD currently weigh in on these decisions. We anticipate greater clarity from the university at large soon.   In the meantime, academic appeals process will continue in SEHD as per by-laws until changes are announced.

Dean Kantor noted that increasing numbers of undergraduate students into our school necessitates a close look at particular issues and challenges that that population faces (as new college students). This committee offers a logical venue to consider these issues and challenges.

We agreed that our foci for this year should be:

  1. Hear and advise on academic appeals;
  2. Award scholarship monies in spring (and as necessary at other times if appropriate);
  3. Review and clarify the process for a student’s dismissal from our programs; Communicate the process for all programs;
  4. Update the committee’s charge during the year according to changes in 1, 2, or 3 above; Inform the faculty of any changes in 1, 2, or 3 above.

Rich Argys agreed to serve as chair of this committee for the 2016-17 year.
