ABSTRACT:
Mobile media are changing how people access and analyze information, leverage distributed networks, and connect learning experiences across everyday and academic settings. This is particularly important in the field of teacher education, as future educators are prepared to support K-12 students’ creativity, critical thinking, and civic engagement. In light of these developments, this presentation reports upon design-based research that enacted mobile mathematics learning for pre-service teachers across classroom, community, and online settings. Dr. Holden will share how a game-based curriculum module was designed to support pre-service teachers’ participation in two mathematics education and mobile learning repertoires: mobile investigation of disciplinary concepts situated in community locations and circumstances, and mobile interpretation of connections between school and everyday mathematics. Drawing upon both design narrative and mixed-methods analyses of three module iterations, Dr. Holden will discuss the qualities of pre-service teachers’ cross-setting disciplinary connections. The presentation will conclude with design recommendations and implications for subsequent attempts at situating learning outside of the university (and teacher education) classroom and across multiple settings through mobile learning.
