Student Committee Meeting Minutes
12/01/14
Attendees: Sandy Snyder-Mondragon, Lori Elliot, Kara Viesca, Shruti Poulsen, Elizabeth Steed, and Suzanne Adams
Bryn Harris (member of committee, but not present – just gave birth!! Congrats Bryn!)
Dorothy Garrison-Wade visited to talk about the role of the committee. Together we explored different options of ways we could provide faculty voice and support to the improved student experience in SEHD. Some ideas we discussed included:
- Helping faculty understand more about the appeals process, necessary documentation, protocols, and how to support students to prevent the need for appeals and complaints to the Dean.
- Examine exit data from across SEHD to understand more about student experiences in SEHD.
- Examine what other commuter campuses do to support students
- Try to find out reasons students leave, stay, come, etc.
- Compile a history of appeals from the last couple of years to illustrate any patterns that faculty may need to be aware of.
- Share across programs various approaches used in the school to support students such as student support plans and other preventative measures.
- Collaborate with various offices and staff to learn more about what is already in motion to support students and how we can work together.
- Examine CU Regents survey data to learn about student perspectives on climate and culture at CU Denver.
After our conversation with Dorothy, we came up with the following plan.
By the last faculty meeting of the year, we will compile a short summary of the appeals process for faculty and staff advisors as well as data related to student experiences in SEHD.
In order to begin on the path to accomplish this, we plan to invite several people to our next meeting to learn about their perspectives related to student issues in SEHD and what things we may need to pay closer attention to.
Our Next Steps:
- (Kara) invite Chris Puckett from legal to meeting to seek his advice regarding documentation, appeals, etc.
- (Sandy) send the link to the appeal and honor code documents to the committee. Committee members will all review the documents and come prepared with questions for Chris.
- (Kara) Invite student advisors to join the meeting.
- (Shruti) Bring Voo Doo Donuts to the meeting! Yay!
- (Kara) Invite Aswad to help us learn about retention and participate in the conversation.
- (Kara) Email Dean and Associate Deans to gain their perspectives on student issues. Ask the following questions: What is your protocol when you hear about a student complaint? What are some of the issues students are facing that you are aware of? What perspectives can you offer in terms of issues we should be paying proactive attention to? We will also let them know our plan to have a brief to share with people at the last faculty meeting of the year.
- (Kara) Send out an agenda a week in advance to the committee.
Next meeting is Feb. 2nd in LSC 700 from 9:30am-11:30am.
