March Women’s History Month Week 2: Focus on Community

We hope that you will utilize (by participating, exploring, and sharing) these events and resources during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (WHM2023).

As part of the progressive work of people with developmental disabilities around the world,

In remembrance of Judith Heumann – The Arc Pike’s Peak Region will be holding a memorial bonfire for Judith Heuman, a leader in the fight for disability rights on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 6:00 pm.

A Ted Talk from Judith Heumann

Our fight for disability rights — and why we’re not done yet Judith Heumann • TEDxMidAtlantic – 17 minutes

Four decades ago, Judith Heumann helped to lead a groundbreaking protest called the Section 504 sit-in — in which disabled-rights activists occupied a federal building for almost a month, demanding greater accessibility for all. In this personal, inspiring talk, Heumann tells the stories behind the protest — and reminds us that, 40 years on, there’s still work left to do. Judith Heumann.com

From the Women & Gender Center (a program of CII: the Center for Identity and Inclusion):

The Body Project – March 7th and 14th from 3:30-6:00 PM Register for the Body Project Today!

This proven 4-hour program empowers women and non-binary students to:

  • Resist cultural pressures to accept the appearance ideal
  • Reallocate your valuable time to something other than striving for an unrealistic body
  • Increase confidence and body satisfaction
  • Bond with other like-minded students

What’s fun about The Body Project? The sessions break down our understanding of beauty standards and challenge how we see ourselves. The sessions are broken up into two 2-hour sessions, held one week apart. You will be part of a small group of women and non-binary students discussing the appearance ideal and how to fight back against it.

The proposed intention of this project is to begin a conversation around women and femme-presenting bodies and the rigorous expectations placed on them. Please be aware that stereotypically “feminine” pronouns are the default for this session, but extra accommodations have been made to make sure that the basic information learned is applicable to all genders.

You can request The Body Project for you and your friends/organization by emailing us at cii@ucdenver.edu.

Please note: the Body Project is not group therapy or treatment for eating disorders. If you are concerned that you or a friend are struggling with an eating disorder, please call Counseling Center Services at 303-315-7270. To learn more about any of the programs & events listed above, email the Women & Gender Center at cii@ucdenver.edu.
