CU Denver 2019 graduates of the School of Education & Human Development’s Doctor of Education, Leadership for Educational Equity (EdD) were honored on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 9 a.m. on the floor of the Colorado House of Representatives. Members of the EdD Latinx cohort and all education doctoral graduates of color were recognized in the special ceremony honoring the largest graduating class of students of color to earn their EdD in a single ceremony in the history of Colorado.
For the greater good, the 23 doctoral graduates have been strong advocates for all students of color engaging in research in: restorative practices, linguistic, culturally and linguistically diverse learners, centered student supports, and to end the school to prison pipeline. Collectively, these graduates have over 500 years of experience working in education in the great State of Colorado.
State Representatives James Coleman and Serina Gonzales-Gutierrez presented the tribute: “We stand before you to honor and congratulate the 2019 University of Colorado Denver’s Latino/a and African American cohort for making history as the largest graduating class of education doctoral degrees by Latino/a and African Americans in Colorado. It is truly an immense occasion to celebrate in this achievement of these amazing individuals who have defied the odds and overcome all the challenges they faced throughout their individual journeys.”
Tania Hogan, one of the Latinx cohort graduates, felt very thankful for the group recognition. “We’ve all worked so hard to achieve this accomplishment. This historic moment, with so many doctoral students of color standing together, would not have happened without the continual educational and personal support we provided each other during this journey. Our hope is that more students of color apply for doctoral programs and become change agents in leadership, equity and education.”
