Evaluating Restorative Practices in Education: An Elementary School Case Study on the Effects of Restorative Practice Interventions and Support on Student Discipline Referrals
The purpose of this qualitative embedded bright spot case study was to investigate the Restorative Practices strategies being implemented and to uncover at what level the discipline intervention is responsible for the decrease in student suspensions and behavioral referrals at one urban elementary school. In this qualitative case study, seven research participants were involved in a one face-to-face, 45-minute interview, using semi-structured, open-ended questions and in some cases, follow-up prompts. The research participants all had engaged with Restorative Practices at some level but not all were part of the implementation phase or had extensive experience with the intervention at the research site. The data identified three major factors related to the effective implementation of Restorative Practices at the research site: The three key factors of importance that emerged as the emerging themes were, (a) relationships, (b) technical support, and (c) Leadership.
