The inclusive pedagogy “first Friday” working group is holding a series of discussions this spring. All SEHD community members are welcome to join as we explore specific teaching practices intended to go beyond inclusive language and into the realm equitable practices for students who face structural disadvantages (using three equitable practices highlighted from Estefan et al. 2023):
February 6- Deliberative Interdependence:
Meaningful collaborative tasks are a strong way to promote equitable academic success. We all use formal or informal collaborative structures for meaning-making in our classes—what strategies work to foster inclusive excellence across various course formats? Join us to discuss what is working well for you and what you find challenging. Together, we’ll try to explore how the strategy of deliberative interdependence might allow for deeper learning and authentic assessment in the current context of AI-assisted student work.
March 6- Transformative Translation:
We all accept the socio-cultural learning tenant that new learning is connected to prior learning and experience, but do our course activities facilitate this connection? Are some forms of community cultural wealth less affirmed? In this session we’ll discuss the equitable practice of “transformative translation”, fostering connection of new knowledge to students’ prior experience in a way that leads to deeper learning. Come ready to share your own teaching practices along with the challenges you may face. We’ll also explore how transformative translation might be a way combat the generative-AI shortcuts that detract from student learning.
April 3- Proactive engagement:
In this session, we’ll explore how we might break down the barriers that prevent working class and minoritized students from accessing the school resources hidden in the “unwritten rules of college” (Estefan et al,. 2023, p270). Let’s talk about who accesses our office hours, research opportunities, and one-on-one mentoring opportunities. Let’s talk about feedback practices that put students at the center of their own education. Let’s talk about proactive engagement.
