Some Fun Facts About Joe

  • Joe thrives on meeting new people and loves collaborating with others.
  • A true foodie, he’s always eager to explore new cuisines. On his current list are Ghanaian and Finnish dishes, and he’s ambitiously working his way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
  • An avid cyclist, Joe enjoys exploring the city’s many bike trails and occasionally commutes to work by bike. He’s always on the lookout for a riding group or buddy since his partner doesn’t share his love for cycling—feel free to join him for a ride!

Joe comes from a family deeply rooted in education. His grandmother was a Spanish teacher in the 1980s, his mother is a retired math teacher, his aunt teaches English, and his father was both a high school football coach and a history teacher during Joe’s early childhood. Growing up, he was taught that educators are not only there to teach but to inspire and shape the next generation.

As a proud member of the Latinx community, Joe cherishes his heritage and takes great pride in his roots. If you ever get him talking about his culture, be prepared for a lively and heartfelt conversation. He’s passionate about sharing the stories of his ancestors and traditions while remaining open and eager to learn from others—especially if it involves swapping delicious recipes!

Joe believes deeply in the power of education and the importance of human development and family relations. Much like the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” he was shaped by his rural New Mexico migrant farming town, where the community played an essential role in his upbringing. To him, education and strong family connections are the foundation of thriving communities, helping people support and uplift one another through both the good and challenging times.

Joe’s first day is Monday, January 6, 2025. Joe will be working from the office three days a week, in LSC #1142 next to Patricia Ball. Feel free to stop by and welcome Joe personally to the department!
