EdPrepLab, an initiative of the Learning Policy Institute and Bank Street College of Education, will host a special policy briefing for members exploring the recent release of The State of the Teacher Workforce: A State-by-State Analysis of Factors Influencing Teacher Shortages, Supply, Demand, and Equity, a new interactive map that provides a state-by-state analysis of the factors that influence the supply and demand for teachers in each state, including teacher’s working conditions and equitable access to qualified teachers. Along with the interactive map, the researchers have also published a blog, Underpaid and Undersupplied: The Hidden Costs of Teaching in America, exploring the extent and implications of teachers paying out-of-pocket for basic classroom supplies.

During the briefing, researchers from the Learning Policy Institute will share findings from their work on the map and lead a discussion on opportunities to leverage the data to support ongoing policy efforts aimed at addressing persistent teacher shortages and inequitable access to certified and experienced teachers. There will be time for participants to look more closely at data from their home states and explore strategies to bolster recruitment and retention efforts in their communities.

Speakers:
  • Emma Garcia, Senior Researcher, Learning Policy Institute
  • Susan Kemper Patrick, Senior Researcher, Learning Policy Institute
  • Ryan Saunders, Deputy Director of State Policy, Learning Policy Institute
