and Q & A

Location: LW-700

Faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the public welcome!

– Presented by Dr. Patrick Manyak, candidate for Assistant/Associate Professor, Tenure Track, Responsive Literacy Education (RLE)

Dr. Manyak’s qualitative research analyzing young Spanish-English emergent bilinguals’ participation in classroom literacy practices that sanctioned their broad linguistic repertoires and sociocultural experiences as valuable resources for acquiring literacy and his last decade of formative experiment research focused on multifaceted vocabulary instruction in grades K-5. His presentation will articulate the need for research on literacy instruction for multilingual learners that transcends the current silo effect by drawing on multiple perspectives on such instruction and sketching out his plan for conducting just such work.

A brief bio for Dr. Patrick Manyak:

Patrick Manyak is a former bilingual elementary school teacher and is currently a faculty member in literacy education at the University of Wyoming. He teaches classes in literacy instruction, coordinates the undergraduate Elementary Education and graduate Literacy Endorsement and Master’s degree programs and conducts research on many aspects of elementary literacy instruction. He has maintained a 30-year focus on the language and literacy development of Spanish-English emergent bilinguals, first as a teacher and then as a researcher. His early research in this area analyzed young emergent bilingual students’ participation in classroom literacy practices that sanctioned the use their broad linguistic repertoires, repositioned the children’s sociocultural experience as a valuable resource for acquiring literacy, and established bilingualism as a special emblem of academic competence. Over the last decade, Patrick has led a series of formative experiment research projects focused on multifaceted vocabulary instruction in grades K-5. In each of these projects, participating students, including many multilingual learners, have made accelerated growth on standardized tests of general vocabulary knowledge. Patrick prioritizes staying in close touch with the realities of actual classrooms by frequently consulting with schools and teachers and teaching elementary students.
