Writing Center Workshops for Faculty

Creating Effective Writing Assignments

Presenter: Justin Bain, Writing Center Director

A common frustration for faculty is that students do not produce the type and level of writing that is expected. This workshop, designed for teachers at all levels of experience, will introduce elements of designing and creating effective writing assignments, including format and structure, activating prior knowledge, and designed intent. We will also discuss strategies for creating opportunities for student discussion and engagement. Attendees will have the chance to create new assignments or revise current assignments.

Writing a Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)

Presenter: Writing Center Staff

This workshop provides an overview of creating a Curriculum Vitae: a specialized academic resume.  Designed for both those who are new to CVs and those who are simply interested in revising their current CVs, the workshop provides a basic template for all CVs as well as optional sections and ideas for non-traditional CVs (hybrids, 1-pagers, etc.). We will discuss who needs a CV and why, as well as what goes in a CV; we will also examine a variety of professional samples. Time will be allotted to look at drafts of your own CV.

Scaffolding Assignments and Meeting Course Goals

Presenter: Justin Bain, Writing Center Director

One of the central elements of effective teaching is scaffolding assignments in order to enable student learning and achieve course goals. In this workshop, we will define the four types of course goals and identify what those goals are for your course. Building on your specific goals, we will work backwards from the final course assignment to create a sequence of activities, experiences, and assignments unique to your course.
