UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER AND CU ANSCHUTZ MEDICAL CAMPUS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING MENTORING OF STUDENT RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
The University of Colorado Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus is a diverse teaching and learning community that creates, discovers and applies knowledge to improve the health and well-being of Colorado and the world. In so doing, faculty engage undergraduate and graduate students in mentored research, creative, and other original scholarly activities. Nominations are now being accepted for the CU Denver and CU AMC Outstanding Mentoring Awards in recognition of exemplary mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in research, creative, and other scholarly activities conducted outside the traditional classroom.
Eligibility: Any full-time faculty member on the CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus who actively engages undergraduate and graduate students in research, creative, and other scholarly activities is eligible to be nominated.
Recognition: Two awardees, one from each campus, will be recognized at the CU Denver Research and Creative Activities Symposium (RaCAS) on Friday, 28 April 2017. In addition, one of the two awardees will be selected to deliver The LYNX Talk, a short keynote address 15-20 minutes in length that describes the awardee’s scholarly activities and philosophy regarding the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The awardees’ departments/units will each receive a $500 prize earmarked to support professionally relevant dissemination of scholarly work by undergraduate or graduate students in that department or unit (e.g., student travel to meetings, page costs, registration fee).
The nomination form may be completed by any current student or alumnus, faculty member, administrator, or staff member, who may also write a letter of support; individuals may also self-nominate (to access the nomination form and obtain additional details, see http://www.ucdenver.edu/student-services/resources/ue/urca/Pages/Outstanding-FacultyMentor-Award1108-3174.aspx).
Nomination materials: Submit the following as a single pdf to Leo.Bruederle@UCDenver.edu by midnight on 1 March 2017. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
1. statement from the nominee no more than two pages long that:
- documents nominee’s success engaging undergraduate and graduate students in impactful research, creative, or other original scholarly activities
- reflects on nominee’s mentoring of students and the types of activities in which students are engaged
- summarizes nominee’s contribution(s) to department, college, and/or university efforts to encourage and support student scholarly activities
- lists UG and GR students mentored over the previous three years, including each student’s name, degree program and unit, title of scholarly activity, current position
2. curriculum vitae, following UCD format, with publications and presentations coauthored with students and student honors highlighted
3. letters of support (2 minimum) from students, alumni, faculty, administrators, or staff Note: Please maintain 1” margins and 12 point font throughout.
Selection criteria will include the following
1. extent of engagement of undergraduate and graduate students
2. impact of students’ research, creative, and other scholarly activities
3. demonstrated commitment to support student scholarly activities at CU Denver
4. extent and significance of nominee’s contributions to their field of scholarship
