Drs. Robin Brandehoff, Tom “YiLe” Su, and doctoral students Daranee Taychachaiwongse Teng, Amie Ha, and John Tran presented at CU Denver’s AANAPISI week on September 25th. Their study, Asian Critical Mentoring as a Third Space of Ontological Resistance, is a collaborative autoethnography that centers three Southeast Asian
students and two Asian/American (AA) faculty at a public university, highlighting the unique obstacles they face and their strategies for overcoming them. Merging case study (Yin, 2014) with collaborative autoethnography (Chang et al., 2013), they employ critical discourse analysis (Van
Dijk, 1993) and AsianCrit (Iftikar & Museus, 2018) to examine how racist institutional ideologies perpetuate exclusion and influence Asian academic trajectories. A co-created third space of resistance emerged through critical mentoring and culturally-sustaining onto-epistemologies.
