While I believe every month is Black History Month, February has its iconic place in reminding us that as educators, it is our duty to continually educate ourselves and others on the importance of the brutal histories, overwhelming creativity, and unbounded joy that is Black culture. Black culture is American culture and resonates profoundly throughout the Americas, lest the current erasure efforts create a generation that forgets history at our own peril. As James Baldwin succinctly said, “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.” Please take advantage of the efforts of our students to honor Black History Month that are listed below.
Event Reminder
The ACE Community & Connection event is on Wednesday, February 11 from 8:30am – 10am in the Lawrence Street Center (LSC) Terrace Room. We are honored to have Professor Michele D. Simpson, JD, from CU Boulder Renee Crown Wellness Institute will lead a session about compassion and dignity – practices that will buoy us in rough waters. Our time together will include mindful movement, stillness, compassion, self-compassion, somatic practices, and loving-kindness practices. There will be opportunities for small group discussion, along with time for sharing in an intentional community space. You are invited to attend the session however you’d like, bringing questions, curiosities, and your whole selves. Over 120 have registered and I look forward to seeing you there!
