We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education titled: Queering Qualitative Methodologies to Dismantle Hegemonic Narratives.

This special issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education invites proposals that push the boundaries of qualitative research by queering methodologies in education. It seeks to dismantle hegemonic methods and methodologies that often exclude queer perspectives, voices, and experiences. The issue interrogates heteronormativity, challenges binary thinking, and explores the fluidities of identity, power, and knowledge production in qualitative research practices.

We invite scholars to engage with various critical qualitative methods (e.g., counternarratives, composite stories, autoethnographies, critical queer discourse analysis) to incorporate a variety of queer critical frameworks. Submissions that foreground BIPOC experiences, epistemologies, and methodologies—particularly those led by BIPOC scholars or community partners—are strongly encouraged. Spanning diverse educational contexts, the issue amplifies new and decolonial ways of knowing and creates spaces that disrupt exclusive ways of thinking that often shut out those who are typically marginalized. Authors are encouraged to embrace innovative forms of representation—including autoethnography, arts-based methods, performative writing, and critical reflexivity—that trouble academic conventions and open new and decolonial possibilities for ethical and epistemological inquiry.

Authors should consider tackling the following questions:

  • What does it mean to “queer” qualitative methodologies?
  • How can queering qualitative methodologies dismantle and transform traditional hegemonic ways of knowing?
  • How can queering qualitative methods amplify marginalized voices, experiences, and perspectives?
  • How can queering qualitative methods expand the potential within and beyond a variety of educational spaces?
  • In what ways can queering qualitative methods be used to dismantle other forms of oppression?
  • How might queering qualitative methodologies work to center BIPOC perspectives, dismantle intersecting systems of racism and heteronormativity, and reimagine educational research practices?
