The Office of Research Services (ORS) would like to bring to your attention a new NIH policy announcement: NOT-OD-25-132 – “Supporting Fairness and Originality in NIH Research Applications.” This policy is in response to the NIH receiving large number of applications from individual investigators in a single application submission round and will apply to all applications submitted on or after the September 25, 2025 receipt date.
Key points for faculty researchers:
- AI Use in Applications: NIH will not consider applications that are substantially developed by AI—or contain sections substantially developed by AI—as original ideas of the applicant.
- Application Limits: NIH is also implementing a cap of six applications per calendar year per individual PI. This applies to new, renewal, resubmission, or revision applications. The cap does not apply to T activity codes and R13 Conference Grants
