Designing Student-Centered Teacher Education: Content and Pedagogy
Tuesday, November 12
Session 1: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EST (18:00 UTC)
Session 2: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EST (00:00 UTC)
To teach children most effectively, teachers need to understand the learning process, as it unfolds in sociocultural contexts, since all learning is rooted in culture and experience, and involves people’s abilities to connect what they already know to what they are seeking to understand. Teachers’ knowledge of how contexts and relationships influence brain development can influence how they create productive classroom environments. Teachers need to understand child and adolescent development, along with developmental processes, in all the domains of development – social, emotional, cognitive, academic, physical, and psychological – and have a set of strategies for coming to know their students well as individuals, as members of families and communities, and as learners. What does this look like across teacher and leader preparation programs, in different cultures, and in different policy contexts?
Note: We are holding 2 sessions at different times of the day to accommodate participants in various time zones. Although both sessions will cover the same topic, the speakers will vary. Speakers will be announced at a later date.

About the World Café Series
The Educator Preparation Laboratory (EdPrepLab), a program within the Learning Policy Institute and Bank Street College of Education, has launched an international online conversation series focused on the transformation of initial educator preparation. These World Cafés engage educator preparation researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in important topical discussions that create an opportunity to share, learn, and act.
Each World Café will situate exemplary educator preparation in the science of learning and development which includes a focus on culturally relevant and responsive pedagogies. The aim is to focus on how we, as a community of practice, are preparing the teachers and school leaders children need and deserve during this time of unprecedented global change.
The first World Café was convened in May 2024 titled: The Future of Equity-Centered Educator Preparation: Building on the Science of Learning and Development. We invited experts to share their experiences across continents and spent time in small groups sharing practices that have been supportive of preservice teacher and leader learning. Participants’ feedback strongly encouraged more opportunities like this for convening around shared concerns, exciting innovations, and engagement with experienced leaders in the field.
