Data to Policy Project Faculty Mentor Grants

The Data to Policy Project (D2P) is requesting applications for faculty grants to encourage the integration of data-based, policy-related research into credit bearing courses. D2P, housed at the Auraria Library, seeks to empower students as researchers and advocates through the use of data to create more equitable communities. D2P collaborates with instructors to integrate student-initiated research projects into curricula as an introduction to interdisciplinary work. The framework is designed to help students develop research skills, develop data literacy, and apply research to present-day policies. For further context, see https://library.auraria.edu/d2pproject

Awards: Five grants of $1100 will be awarded to faculty as compensation for the development of course projects that address the mission of the D2P. This includes research that:

  • Advocates for equitable and evidence-based policies
  • Uses higher education’s research infrastructure to benefit the community
  • That analyzes and anticipates how policies impact target populations
  • Promotes public scholarship, transparency, and accountability

Course projects should:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to develop and apply data analysis skills to “real world” problems
  • Address policy related to “public good,” including any social, political, environmental, etc. topic focused on community well-being.
  • Utilize D2P resources and staff in student projects. This may include dataset identification assistance, presentation and project preparation assistance, and/or one-on-one student research support.
  • Encourage student attendance and/or presentations at a D2P research symposium

Eligibility: All full-time and part-time faculty from Denver Community College, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the University of Colorado Denver are eligible for the award.

Proposal Submission: Proposals for the D2P Faculty Grant will be submitted through this form:

tinyurl.com/d2pFacultyGrant

The form will prompt you for the following information for each course:

  • A short description of the course to be integrated with the D2P project, including the course’s learning objectives, course number/level, and when it’s offered
  • A short description of the assignment/project that will be included the course
  • A short discussion of how the assignment/project addresses the mission of D2P and achieves the learning goals of the course

The proposal form will also request an abbreviated CV (file or link) that highlights recent and relevant activities promoting student research and faculty mentoring if applicable.

Incomplete proposals will not be reviewed. Proposal answers should be concise yet effectively communicate course integration plans.

Proposal Deadline: June 8th, 2021

Review Process: Proposals will be reviewed by June 14th. Awards will be announced on June 15th, 2021.

Project Completion: Grant recipients are required to meet with D2P representatives at least two times during the semester and submit a brief report discussing the effectiveness of the project. It should outline strengths and weaknesses of the assignment, student response and achievements, and potential project improvements. This report will be due on June 30, 2022. Grantees who fail to submit a final report will not be eligible for future awards. Grantees are also expected to serve as judges for at least one of the two D2P sponsored research symposia during the 2021-2022 academic year.
