BVSD promises renewed push to hire teachers of color
The last strategy is to increase the number of teachers of color applying to teach in the district, including encouraging Boulder Valley students of color to go into teaching.
Gradoz said the district wants to enhance its current grow-your-own teacher programs for high school students. In Boulder Valley, the concurrent enrollment Pathways2Teaching program is offered in partnership with the University of Colorado Denver at Boulder and Centaurus high schools. Those who successfully complete the program are admitted to CU Denver. Gradoz said he wants to add helping them with financial aid or tuition breaks.
“We need to recruit kids of color to be teachers,” he said.
Another idea is to visit a few out-of-state colleges with a high percentage of education students of color and give them incentives to do their student teaching in Boulder Valley.
