Learn about CAR (containment and autonomic regulation) Trauma Therapy: A Cutting-Edge Model for Resolving Trauma and Healing PTSD through the Autonomic Nervous System at www.loveandtrauma.com
Throughout the past 15 years, there has been significant research that places trauma as a key cause in many mental health issues, physical disease processes and substance abuse. Left unattended , therapeutic progress gets mysteriously detoured or grinds to a halt. The CAR (Containment and Autonomic Regulation) Trauma Therapy Model includes Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing work at its foundation, and then penetrates deeper. The CAR protocol guides clients in healing PTSD by sequencing traumatic charge through the autonomic nervous system, developing foundational resourcing skills, and teaching the relational skill sets critical in the reintegration process
Attendees will walk away with the following skills –
- You will analyze the various memory systems and learn how to apply particular clinical strategies at the correct time
- You will develop unique skill sets to support clients in releasing the traumatic energy through the body.
- You will recognize and work with the 5 major autonomic nervous system stress and trauma states
- You will recognize the 4 key phases of working with traumatized clients, and how to clinically work within each phase
- You will become acquainted with the transferential roles that are essential to working with familial trauma, and how it influences the experience of compassion fatigue for counselor
- You will feel confident in integrating this trauma model into your current clinical style
Schedule for the day
Morning -The theory behind CAR (Containment and Autonomic Regulation) Trauma Therapy
I .The Research on trauma
- The impact of trauma on mental illness
- The impact of trauma on physical illness
- Why unresolved trauma destroys addiction recovery
- Why unresolved trauma impedes therapeutic progress
II How and where is trauma stored?
- How to navigate the three memory systems
■ semantic (narrative) memory
■ event (autonomic) memory
■ procedural (behavioral) memory
- Develop strategies for matching specific interventions to specific memory systems.
III. Mapping the autonomic nervous system:
- Understanding the 4 discrete nervous symptom states
- working with symptoms (from mild stress to full dissociation)
- the need for bottom-up processing
IV. Developing competency in the 4 essential phases of trauma therapy
- resourcing
- (re)establishment of boundaries, trust and attachment
- containment through the autonomic nervous system
- integration
V. How and when to combine trauma therapy with other disorders:
- Addiction recovery
- Bipolar disorder
VI. Strategies on working with clients’ traumatic transference and countertransference
Afternoon – The Visceral Experience……..Making the Theory Real.
VI Experiential lab I – Somatic Containment of Stress and Trauma
- Transforming the theory into practice
- Experience how traumatic charge heals by sequencing through the body
- Utilizing mindfulness to track somatic process
- Viscerally feeling the 4 different nervous system states
- Developing empathy for where you’re leading clients
- Gain entirely new understanding of how to heal PTSD
VII Experiential lab II- The Foundation of Resourcing
- Learn the foundational piece of all trauma therapies
- Experientially develop the skill of autonomic regulation
- Practice self-soothing to develop new habitual coping responses
- Understand when to choose trauma management over resolution
- Gain the ability to shift nervous system states at will
