Hi ReneWe just learned of a 7 month pregnant women detained at the El Paso Detention Center.<\/strong> She has been detained for just over 3 months. In August, Lucia fled Guatemala in an effort to get away from her abusive husband. “The last beating I got was so bad that I thought he had killed our unborn baby.”<\/em>She turned herself in at the U.S. port of entry, thinking that she’d be able to seek refuge here.Sign the Petition: Demand Oversight Inside El Paso Detention Center<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In September, Lucia passed her credible fear interview (proving she had a legitimate case to fight), however ICE has, so far, refused to release her to family, here in the U.S. Lucia has now been in detention for almost 4 months, all while pregnant!<\/strong> Lucia’s continued detention is not healthy for her, or her unborn baby. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Sign our National Petition Demanding a FULL Review of the Facility by Washington<\/a>n <\/a>D.C.!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucia’s story comes on the heels of over 70 cases coming out of this one detention center. All of the immigrants we’ve been hearing from have been complaining about one thing; they’ve all been granted credible fear, and are eligible for parole, but someone in ICE leadership is refusing to release them.<\/strong> In addition to Lucia we know of another pregnant women also detained inside the detention center; she’s 2 months pregnant.<\/p>\n

According to ICE’s own policies what’s happening inside El Paso, with immigrants like Lucia shouldn’t be happening.<\/strong><\/a> In a memo issued in 2009, to go into effect on January 4th, 2010, John Morton, the former Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026[W]hen an arriving alien <\/em>found to have credible fear<\/em><\/strong> establishes to the satisfaction of DRO his or her <\/em>identity<\/em><\/strong> and that he or she <\/em>presents neither a flight<\/em><\/strong> risk <\/em>nor danger to the community<\/em><\/strong>, DRO should, absent additional factors, <\/em>parole the alien<\/em><\/strong> on the basis that his or her continued detention is not in the public interest.<\/span>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Lucia’s continued detention is NOT in the best interest of the United States. Lucia is NOT a flight risk, nor a danger to the community. Months ago, Lucia turned in paperwork showing her ties to the community, where she’d be living, and made promises to appear in court. Despite all this, and ICE’s own, clear, rule on the issue, local ICE leaders are still refusing to follow the rules, and release Lucia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Add Your Voice to the National Petition Calling on ICE<\/a> in <\/a><\/strong>Washington D.C. to Initiate a Full Review of the El Paso Detention Center. We Need an End to ICE Abuses!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the coming days we’ll be working hard to bring you more stories of immigrants affected by this abuse. Just today we heard from a mother, Maria, who left the United States in order to go to Mexico and hug her dead kids one last time.<\/strong> Her children, both DREAMers, were killed by cartels after being deported in 2011. Maria turned herself in at the U.S. port of entry after the same cartels that killed her children also threatened her life. Maria has now been detained for 14 months, despite having passed her own credible fear interview, 8 months ago, in March of this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

These injustices against our community need to stop. Help us get the word out; sign the national petition and share it with a friend.<\/p>\n
