Creating conditions where the greatest amount of learning can take place by providing quality experiences for students within shortened timeframes is an exciting and daunting challenge.  Identifying and using best practices for teaching in compressed formats will help increase the likelihood of course goal attainment. Make the most of your summer class by deepening your planning of best practices related to student engagement, writing, and assessment strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Faculty Development (CFD) will sponsor a two session workshop to assist faculty members who are planning to teach a new online course or an existing online course for the first time in Maymester or in the Summer 2016 semester.  The \u201cTeaching Online in Condensed Formats\u201d workshop will demonstrate complimentary (face-to-face and online) illustrations of best practices for designing or restructuring a traditional semester-long course without compromising requirements, rigor, or curriculum standards.<\/p>\n<p><b>WORKSHOP OVERVIEW<\/b> | The \u201cTeaching Online in Condensed Formats\u201d workshop includes two sessions. <\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#F50000\">Attendance at sessions 1 and 2 is mandatory in order to be eligible for a professional development stipend<\/div>\n<p>, however all sessions are open to individuals just seeking that content. Note, session #2 is offered twice, participants should choose the one meeting date (option A or B) that works best for them.<\/p>\n<p><i>Session 1<\/i> | February 12th | 9:00 am &#8211; 1:00 pm| LSC 1201<br \/>\nChallenges of teaching condensed formats<br \/>\nDesigning, scheduling, and assessing writing assignments<br \/>\nAssessment strategies for accelerated teaching formats<\/p>\n<p><i>Session 2<\/i><br \/>\n<b> Option A<\/b> | February 19th | 9:00 am &#8211; 1:00 pm| LSC 1201<br \/>\n<b> Option B<\/b> | February 26th | 9:00 am &#8211; 1:00 pm| LSC 1201<br \/>\nApplied utilization of Canvas FOR ONLINE INSTRUCTION with a focus on writing and assessment strategies<\/p>\n<p>Workshop topics include:<br \/>\n&#8211; Syllabus and course packet design considerations.<br \/>\n&#8211; Essential components of planning for teaching in condensed formats.<br \/>\n&#8211; Evidence-based teaching strategies to enhance student engagement.<br \/>\n&#8211; Enhanced utilization of Canvas.<br \/>\n&#8211; Designing a hybrid course in a condensed format.<br \/>\n&#8211; Strategies for designing, scheduling, and assessing writing assignments in condensed course offerings.<br \/>\n&#8211; Structuring class time to optimize learning and minimize fatigue.<br \/>\n&#8211; Assessment strategies that work well for accelerated teaching formats.<\/p>\n<p><b>PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STIPEND<\/b> | This workshop is available to all faculty (full or part-time) including lecturers, instructors, clinical teaching-track, tenure-track, and tenured. This also includes those that have taught in condensed formats as well as those new to an intensive delivery. Faculty members who are preparing to teach <b>a Maymester online or hybrid course<\/b> (Mondays \u2013 Thursdays, May 16- June 2, 2016) <b>or a condensed summer online or hybrid course<\/b> (described as less than the traditional 16 week format) <b>for the first time<\/b> are eligible for a $500 stipend by attending both sessions of the \u201cTeaching Online in Condensed Formats\u201d workshop and providing the CFD access to your Canvas shell that contains at minimum a copy of your course syllabus, readings, assignments, assessment measures, and a schedule of topics with accompanying due dates by May 2nd, 2016.
