Hewlett\u2019s presentation, \u201cA Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste,\u201d explores his teaching philosophy through the intersecting lenses of educational equity, identity, and the social foundations of schooling. Drawing on his background as a multiracial foster child, educator, mentor, counselor, and scholar, he will discuss how this formative message shaped his commitment to helping students understand education as a site where human potential can be nurtured, recognized, or diminished, and how that commitment informs his teaching, mentoring, and scholarship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A brief bio for Dr. <\/strong><strong>Brian Hewlett<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brian N. Hewlett, Ph.D., M.A., LPCC is an educator and scholar whose teaching and mentoring span sociology, ethnic studies, psychology, and counseling. He has taught undergraduate students here locally in the Denver area, in other parts of the U.S. and abroad internationally, with various appointments at different institutional types including Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the Technical University of Dresden among others. His work emphasizes culturally responsive teaching, personal development, and the social foundations of education. His scholarship and teaching interests include religious and spiritual identity, social movements, race and inequality, and the ways the education process is\u00a0shaped by society.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brian Hewlett\u2019s CV can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/id\/urn:aaid:sc:US:393a9cf1-de21-4a66-ab5c-7e757a79ce9c\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.
