Student John Fahrenbach explores the options and searches for the &#8220;gold standard&#8221; community. John is a senior honors student at Lake Forest High School.\u00a0 He has spent many hours of his time working with developmentally disabled residents at Misericordia Home in Chicago.\u00a0 Last fall, he organized &#8220;Miles for Misericordia,&#8221; a one day, 100-mile bike ride that raised over $25,000 for the charity.\u00a0 John is a three-time recipient of the President&#8217;s Volunteer Service Award for his commitment to Misericordia and several other community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mara Mintzer \u2022 TEDxMileHigh \u2022 14 minutes<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mara_mintzer_how_kids_can_help_design_cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How kids can help design cities<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adults tend to think of kids as &#8220;future citizens&#8221; &#8212; their ideas and opinions will matter someday, just not today. But kids make up a quarter of the population, so shouldn&#8217;t they have a say in what the world they&#8217;ll inherit will look like? Urban planner Mara Mintzer shares what happened when she and her team asked kids to help design a park in Boulder, Colorado &#8212; and how it revealed an important blind spot in how we construct the built environment. &#8220;If we aren&#8217;t including children in our planning, who else aren&#8217;t we including?&#8221; Mintzer asks.<\/p>\n<p>These are services around campus.
