\u2013 Presented by Dr. Jenine Buchanan, candidate for Assistant or Associate Professor, Clinical Teaching Track, Leadership for Educational Organizations (LEO) Program\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Higher Education in the United States was founded on systemic racism and white male privilege. Accordingly, the language of higher education reflects the centering of white males in its founding documents, mission statements, visions, strategic plans and diversity action plans. This presentation will examine the history of higher education and its language, identify problematic approaches to discussing \u201cDEI,\u201d and recommend approaches for leaders decolonize the language and actions of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion plans.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A brief bio for Dr. Jenine Buchanan: <\/span><\/b>Nina Buchanan (she\/her) earned a Doctor of Education from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Her dissertation examined the factors leading to the attrition of new professionals in Student Affairs. Nina\u2019s research focuses on supporting career retention and mentoring for higher education professionals. She currently serves as an associate teaching professor and program chair for the Ed. D. and M. Ed. programs in higher education at Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware. Prior to her faculty role, Nina served in various academic and student affairs roles, including residential roles; summer bridge programs; federal TRIO programs, which support low-income and first-generation college students; academic advising; and leadership roles in undergraduate academic support services and the office of the registrar. Nina has been engaged with NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising for over 15 years, having served as a conference co-chair and coordinator for the mentoring program for the mid-Atlantic region. She is also involved with ACPA: College Student Educators International, and currently serves on the editorial board for the Research in Brief publication of the Journal of College Student Development. Locally, she is a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), which promotes college attendance for womxn in the United States through civic advocacy and scholarships. She recently completed a term as the Mentoring Coordinator for the Wilmington, Delaware chapter of AAUW.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
