Carlos Hipolito-Delgado, an associate professor counseling at the University of Colorado Denver, recently worked on a study looking at how repeated exposure to racism predicts internalized racism – or self-hatred – in Latino undergraduate students. Study: Latino Students Internalize Racist Language They Hear From Politicians, Media<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump changed the tenor of the immigration debate when he said Mexican migrants were “bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists” on the campaign trail. Comments like that prompted CU Denver counseling professor Carlos Hipolito-Delgado to look into internalized racism among Latino college students. Hipolito-Delgado surveyed around 300 students for the study, and found that the effects of hearing negative language from politicians and pundits can be far-reaching. Hipolito-Delgado talked to Colorado Matters about how, as Latino students hear people describe them as inferior so often, they start to believe it.<\/p>\n
