About the Teacher Preparation Process – Another View, by John Paull

I have had the pleasure of working full-time in the teacher preparation field – for over fifteen years as director an alternative program and, since 2004, as Site Professor in UCD’s more traditional program.

Now, after 50 years in education, as teacher, advisor, principal, lecturer, and teacher-of-teachers, it’s time to hang up my pen and notebook and take up gardening.

As I remake the vast garden around my home I shall, no doubt, be reflecting on what I’ve experienced, what I’ve seen in countless classrooms, and to consider more objectively the significant changes taking place in public school education.

These changes impact every teacher, in every school.

In turn, they impact every teacher candidate in every program that places its cohort in the public school setting.

Teacher candidates, of course, can’t compare and contrast their experiences in today’s classrooms with those of yesterday.

I can. Experienced, long-time Clinical Teachers can.

So, given that I so appreciate the passion and commitment of those TCs with whom I’ve worked, I would like to offer a BIG word of thanks to those who whole-heartedly welcomed aspiring teachers into their classrooms.

I was – and continue to be – so appreciative of those who were willing and eager to share their teaching knowledge and their wisdom about the complexities of teaching and learning with someone just entering the noble profession. Taking on yet another commitment on top of a heavy load of responsibility, was no small feat.

Their generosity – with their time and with their classroom – is to be applauded.

Thank you, CTs, thank you.

Thank you for your positive mentoring. Thank you for modeling your ‘best’ classroom practice. Thank you for sharing those tips and techniques that engage and motivate your students. Thank you for sharing your off-peak times to sit, talk and listen. Thank you for building – and sometimes rebuilding – the confidence of your classroom guests.

Your ability to share ownership of your classrooms and most of what took place inside your four walls, meant that more and more students are better served, now and tomorrow, when those TCs became full-time teachers.

In many ways, you are the backbone of all teacher preparation programs.

John Paull, Site Professor, South MS, APS

*Thank you John, for all your years of service and dedication to CU Denver. We will miss you!

TCs – please pass this along to your CTs on this, THANK A TEACHER DAY!

Edison TCs

Congratulations to UCD teacher candidates Jessica Ackley and Lauren Defeo (both in Mt. Lincoln cohort) who were hired in 2nd grade positions at Edison Elementary!

Lori Elliott, Site Professor, Edison Elementary School, DPS

Patrick Mangan

Patrick (Mt. Sherman cohort) took on the task of teaching the memoir writing assignment in his 5th grade classroom and he made it his own. Patrick is using a picture book recommended by his CT to share his own memoir from his experiences as a marine in Iraq. His enthusiasm about teaching is contagious and he embraces every opportunity to practice his teaching. Pactick is a model of eagerness for new challenges and makes everyday a learning experience.

Teri Brogdon and Michelle Curtain, Site Team, Vassar Elementary School, APS

Kaly Warner

Kaly Warner a TC (Dual – in Quandary Peak cohort) is a member of a successful quartet. Her quartet was recently in a competition and actually tied for the most points at the competition (but received 2nd place because they received a lower score in the tie breaking category). They are now the first place quartet (out of ten) who can qualify as a wildcard to make it to the international competition (which is actually in Denver this year). Her quartet was also selected to perform the National Anthem for the Commencement Ceremony at UCD on May 12th!

Caron Westland, Site Professor, Carmody MS, Jeffco PS

Details from Kaly!

Ruby Blue Quartet update:
Ruby Blue and Bounce quartets both received the highest scores in the Region 8 – 621 (That’s super awesome in the Sweet Adelines world)! In a tie breaker situation, whoever scored higher in the “Sound” category wins. Subsequently, Bounce placed 1st and Ruby Blue placed 2nd.

What does it all mean?
There are 35 regions in the Sweet Adelines Society. The 1st place quartet from each region automatically qualifies to go to the International Quartet competition. After all of the regions have competed, the top 10 scoring non-winning quartets qualify to go to International as wildcards.

So what about Ruby Blue?
Ruby Blue is currently the top scoring wildcard quartet (as well as tied with Bounce as the current 5th top-scoring quartet overall (8-o)), but there are still a few weeks of regional competitions left for us to keep an eye on. There would have to be 10 more quartets to score higher than us to push us out of the wildcard race, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that that won’t happen.

If we do qualify for International, it will be extra special because this year, the competition is being held in Denver at the Pepsi Center in October!

Carmody Middle School, a new Jeffco partner in the PDS network, is hosting a thank you BBQ at Carmody to recognize the efforts of the TCs and CTs working in collaboration to model the benefits of simultaneous renewal in the clinical classrooms. In the first year of the program, Carmody has hosted 15 TCs across the areas of special education, social studies, science, language arts, and Spanish. The TCs have been active members of the learning community, participating in PLCs and Saturday school to support the Carmody students. – Caron

Carmody celebrated its completion of their first year of a partnership with UCD. As a thank you, TC’s hosted a BBQ to thank the school. Principal Scott Allensworth grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for the staff. They then had a short meeting to recognize all of the CTs work throughout the year. They were given a planter and some seeds. Their cards said, “Thank you for helping us grow as teachers.” It was a beautiful day out and fun was had by all. – Carolyn

My name is Carla Johnson and I work for a division of the Boy Scouts of America called Learning for Life. On May 11th we are hosting a huge event at Cherry Creek State Park called Adventure Day. This event is centered around providing activities for special needs children that they would not generally have the opportunity to participate in (such as boat rides, fishing, rock climbing, etc.).

We are desperately in need of volunteers for the event and I was wondering if you could please help us get the word out. I have attached our Volunteer Flyer that can passed out and/or posted for students (preferably interested in working with special needs children in the future). Please let me know if there is any way that you can help, or if you are not in a position to help, perhaps you could point me in the direction of someone in the Education Department at DU that can. I would also like to notify any other extra-curricular clubs that you can think of as well.

He was typically developing until the age of 16 months when he had a rare form of bacterial meningitis that is not covered by the Prevnar vaccination. As a result, he lost his hearing completely & now has bilateral cochlear implants. He has other developmental issues (Autism Spectrum) that overlap with all of this. He definitely has an uphill battle, but he is strong, adorable and I am certain there is much more progress to be made.

In Utah, we set up an in-home ABA therapy program. We are trying to set that up in our home here in Highlands Ranch.

-We live in Highlands Ranch, close to Mountain Vista High School.

-We have an office room that we have set up as a classroom. There is a child’s table and chair and most of the instruction is at the table with lots of play breaks intermixed (all within the classroom).

-We have 2 positions to fill, approx. 10 hours a week each position.

-There are 3 hour shifts, most likely 9 am-12 noon & 2 pm-5 pm. These are somewhat flexible, but once the schedule is set, it is not flexible. We typically do a schedule for two months at a time.

-We will be paying $12/hr. We pay on a weekly basis.

-We have hired a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) to oversee the program, provide ongoing training, staff meetings, etc. Her name is Abigail Campbell; for those going into a related field this is another way to receive a lot of great training and additional knowledge from a very experienced individual in the field.

-Experience with ABA is strongly preferred, but not required. Experience with children with special needs is also a plus or other various education experience.

-Training will begin in May & the therapy will begin the third week of June (starting on June 19th), as we will be on vacation June 1-18.

-We would really like to find someone that will be as long term as possible, as training is very expensive. So, we are not looking for someone that will just be around for the summer, etc.

-If interested, please email resume with contact information and at least 2 references to achambers@q.com

I need to stress this is not a babysitting job, it is a very specific therapy job where data is taken, etc. It is a wonderful opportunity for college students that are going into related fields of study.

I would really appreciate any leads, as we are so anxious to get this up & going!

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

The internship element of the special education licensure program provides the opportunity for you to connect theory to practice and is essential to your success in the program. With this in mind, please review the following information regarding the process for internship application for all “one-the-job” and alternative internship experiences and the reminder of the submission dates. A completed internship application must be submitted for all internships that are completed outside of a UCD partner school.

If you are intending to complete a special education internship outside of a UCD partner school during the Spring term of 2012, your completed application materials must be submitted to your special education faculty advisor by October 1st, 2011 for approval.

To ensure that each of your internship experiences provides you with varied professional opportunities to apply your skills in natural settings, and to enlarge the range of strategies you bring to the classroom, please remember to plan ahead and communicate with your advisor regarding internship requirements. All teacher candidates in the special education endorsement program are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skill with students of varying age and grade levels, so a range of internship experiences will be designed individually between you and your advisor.
I graduated in May 2011 and was offered a long term from August until the end of September for a 1st grade class at Laredo Elementary. It is also the internship site I did my student teaching at. I knew most of the kids, since I completed that internship with the kindergarten students. It was a great experience and I learned so much things b/c even at the end of my internship, I felt like I was only starting to get my feet wet! Doing the long term was definitely challenging b/c it was my class, but at the same time, it wasn’t. For the most part, everything was great, but being a newbie, I was absolutely overwhelmed, but I can proudly say that it was prepared me even better. I too, for the first time, experienced how hard teachers work to make everything better for their students.

I have been subbing for Aurora Public Schools since then, and just received an offer for another long term sub for Fulton Elementary starting in April for 2nd grade. I have yet to accept it.

I have just been offered a job opportunity for an out of state district, in Minnesota. It is located in North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District . I’ll have to research about getting a license there. Maybe the winds will carry me there for Fall 2012.

Debra Minahan

Debra Minahan, a 2011 alum of the UCTE program, is now a full time 5th grade teacher right here at Parr Elementary in Jefferson County. While finishing her program, Debra so impressed the staff that, when an opening occurred, she was asked to interview. Needless to say, she blew her competition out of the water!

So, now, after a month in her classroom, I asked her about her new role.

The best part of the job is definitely working with the kids! Helping them to solve problems and master their curriculum makes her use every tool she ever learned and then some…

The biggest surprise for her was how quickly the students accepted her as their new teacher. They have truly embraced her, not only in the classroom, but in the entire school community.

The most challenging part is EVERYTHING!

Well, nobody ever said that this work was easy, but it the best work we can ever do!
Way to go, Debra and all our UCTE grads!

MJ Lechner, Site Professor, Parr Elementary School, Jeffco

Emilie McDonough

My AmeriCorps member Emilie McDonough has been chosen to attend CGIU in late March! The process whereby she was chosen was a competitive one. She had to write a “Commitment to Action” Project, and I had to also write a letter of recommendation to go with her application. Her application was sent to our Regional office, who reviewed all apps submitted, and selected strong candidates to send to CGIU, who made the final decision about who to invite to this year’s meeting! This is a distinct honor for Emilie, and we are really proud of her!! Compact Service Corps (our Regional Organization) is taking care of all Emilie’s expenses, and I know she will represent the School of Education and Human Development proudly!! Congrats again, Emilie, and thanks all!

On Feb 1, 2012, the Department of Education (ED) launched the National Education Startup Challenge, http://nesc.challenge.gov, asking students to develop innovative, real world solutions to improve education.

Students from across the country are invited to submit a business plan and a video pitch for a for-profit or non-profit startup that includes an innovative strategy, product or service designed to address one of these four topics:

1. Middle Grades Matter
Helping middle school students transition to high school and stay on track to graduate.

2. Skills, Skills, Skills
Providing students in rural, urban, and/or high-poverty communities with opportunities for internships or other work- and community-based learning experiences that help them develop skills for success in postsecondary education, 21st century careers, and civic life.

3. Education Pays
Making it easier for students and families to find and select high-quality, affordable postsecondary programs – whether colleges, universities, or career training programs – that provide good value.

4. Finishing Faster
Increasing the likelihood that postsecondary students complete their degrees and decreasing the time it takes them to finish, such as by improving and speeding up remedial education.

Please share the National Education Startup Challenge flyer with your programs, education partners, and student organizations.

Every day, AmeriCorps Members across the country are making a powerful difference in communities and their own lives. Each year during AmeriCorps Week, we recognize the commitment of AmeriCorps Members and alums and highlight the extraordinary value AmeriCorps brings to our nation.

Our two main goals for 2012 AmeriCorps Week are to:

help make AmeriCorps Members and alums feel part of something larger than themselves and their projects by connecting them with each other and a nationwide effort.

communicate the powerful impact AmeriCorps has on critical national and community challenges and on the lives of Members and alums.

Our theme this year is “AmeriCorps Works.” This theme communicates the value and effectiveness of AmeriCorps while providing flexibility to be used in many different contexts. It provides an overarching framework to communicate AmeriCorps triple bottom line return on investment — for the recipients of service, the people who serve, and the larger community and nation.

Originally sent December 18th, 2011

It is with a very heavy heart this morning that I write to share with you that the young woman shot and killed on Friday in Denver by her estranged boyfriend as she was leaving home was a former UCD teacher candidate, Andrea Roan. She was a member of Torrey’s Peak cohort, completing the UCTE program in Spring 2011. She had been hired this fall by her partner school where she completed her internships, Alsup Elementary in Adams 14 as a 5th grade teacher.

In the words of her site professor, Pam McEwen, “her students absolutely adored her”. Pam was able to be with Andrea and her family at the hospital to say goodbye before she passed away. We have set up a memorial blog to share memories and condolences which I will later collect into a memory book to give to her family. Click here to comment: http://andreateacherforever.blogspot.com/

Sending prayers for peace and comfort for her family and for the many people whose lives she touched….Cindy Gutierrez

TCs Lori Strobel, Kristi Leonard, Kerry Baldwin and Claudia Cardenas hosted a well-attended family night for the Goldrick Elementary community on January 12, 2012. This evening of painting piggy banks and meeting a Young American Bank representative was the brain child of Kristi Leonard. Inspired by the children’s book, Dream Big, Little Pig, (Yamaguchi, 2011) which principal Dr. Maria Uribe gave out to all faculty at the beginning of the school year, Kristi wanted to help Goldrick students set their sights on going to college and gain the motivation and direction that having such a goal could provide. The personally painted piggy bank would serve as a reminder of this goal and the necessity to work toward it in many ways, including that of saving money. In addition to the banks and books, many students won raffled items, such as pens, shirts, magnets, that were donated by local colleges and universities.

An AmeriCorps mini-grant provided funds for the ceramic piggy banks, paint supplies, snacks and books made available to all participants. TCs worked to gather the materials for painting and the raffle, as well as to organize a workable process for 274 students to paint their banks. TC Michelle Assadki also helped collect items from the colleges, and contributed wonderful pictures. Kudos to each one who worked to make this such a successful and enjoyable family event!

I am pleased to announce that registration is open for the 2012 CCIRA Conference. I have been so fortunate to have attended this conference in the past, and plan to attend this year as well. After reading through the registration book, I am very excited about the speakers and sessions. This year’s lineup includes many literacy experts: Stephen Krashen, Dick Allington, The Two Sisters (Gail Boushey and Joan Moser), Georgia Heard, and also some great children’s authors (Gary Pauslen, Joy Cowley, and Patricia MacLachlan). I have only mentioned a few of the experts who are flying in for the conference. There are quite a few recognized literacy experts who will be part of the conference. There are also top-notch educators from around the state who will be sharing their expertise during the conference. The Technology Playground promises to be a great place to try out some new literacy-based technology, and there are many regular sessions focused on technology. Check out the link and you’ll find the list of invited speakers and authors. You will also find the registration book, which is a 34-page book filled with session descriptions and conference details.

Please let me know if I can be of further help. I hope to see you at CCIRA in February.

I love what is being done at Rose Hill for the students and community and it is something that I would feel very lucky to continue being part of.”

Melanie brings many, many strengths to her teaching. In addition to planning and implementing solid instruction that is highly engaging as well as instructionally purposeful, Melanie is exceptionally flexible. “Especially in my last internship I have had to show a lot of flexibility in the classroom. This has ended up being a huge blessing and has taught me so much about myself and the school. It has shown my that I am capable of doing things outside of my comfort zone.”

The first-grade team has come to regard Melanie as a valued and valuable member. She is a quick study and has become skilled in teaching the already-established District 14 literacy program and the math program that was adopted just this year. Her teammates know they can count on her to provide consistent instruction for her own students, as well as in the other two first-grade classrooms when needed. Melanie appreciates all that she has learned from her team and from her students. “I am so proud and honored to go into school and work with them everyday.”

Looking forward to her first year of teaching Melanie reflects, “I hope to be the best teacher that I can be. I hope to have a positive impact on each student and help them reach and exceed their potential as learners. I hope to learn more everyday about how to be a better teacher. I also hope to survive the exhaustion!”

We at Rose Hill have no doubt that Melanie will be a very successful teacher and that her students will thrive in the caring learning environment she will provide. Thank you, Melanie, for all of your hard work as a Teacher Candidate and for bringing your passion for teaching to Rose Hill!

Also, if you will remember from your AmeriCorps Orientation, Coordinator Willie Brown advised you of funds that are available to support your Professional Development. These are called Careers in the Common Good (CCG) scholarships. The CCG Scholarships support professional and Member development opportunities for up to $250 per Member. These opportunities include professional conferences, site-specific trainings, personal development workshops, and topic-specific forums addressing critical community needs. For most Members, the CCG Scholarship supports their first professional or Member development experience, further solidifying their commitment to serving community needs through their specific field or interest area and connecting them to other professionals in the field. Please see Ms. Brown for more information and paperwork should you decide to take advantage of these funds! Thank you!

The faculty from Linguistically Diverse Education And Special Education have collaborated to offer a crosslisted version of CLDE 5050/SPED 5050 Assessment and Advocacy for Diverse Learners. The course fulfills partial requirement for LDE-E endorsement and is required as part of the new SPED MA concentration in Linguistically Responsive Special Education. The course will be offered Spring 2012 on Thursday evenings from 5-7:45pm.

The purpose of this course is to prepare teachers to use assessment results within a strengths-based framework to advocate for appropriate programming, placement and instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Teachers will examine how linguistic and cultural factors influence assessment results, and will learn how to use data from a variety of assessments that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to build a strength-based student learning profile and progress monitoring plan to accurately assess student’s skills both academically and linguistically. The course will include more in-depth attention to formative and summative classroom-based assessments (such as those used in gifted and special education referral), as well as to state-wide standardized assessments currently used in Colorado. Through case studies and classroom examples, teachers will gain the knowledge and confidence to advocate for appropriate assessment and instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students.

pictured, Noah Brown

Meet Noah Brown who is completing his final internship at Niver Creek Middle School. Donna Nelson is his CT and he is working with 6th and 7th grade science students.

Noah was born in Colorado and graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Biology. He is currently in a graduate program at the University of Colorado-Denver working toward a degree in education to become the best teacher he can be for his students. Noah loves science, the outdoors, and living in Colorado. When he’s not in school he enjoys spending time with his two dogs and working in the garden.

He is always looking for opportunities to learn so that he can bring new and exciting things to the classroom. This past summer he spent nine days on the Colorado River, rafting 275 miles through the Grand Canyon as part of a university course on Experiential Learning. The course challenged him to create lesson plans that would get students excited about their surroundings – observing, and asking questions while thinking outside of the classroom and making connections to their everyday lives.

According to the publication Teacher Leader Model Standards, teacher leaders model effective practices, exercise their influence in formal and informal contexts, and support collaborative team structures within their schools. Since beginning his work at Niver Creek this fall, Noah has demonstrated these leadership qualities. He is our EdWeb liaison with the University and brought back the training he received and quickly got our school site up and running and has maintained responsibility for the site by updating our school calendar, posting important information and uploading documents.

In addition, Noah has taken a leadership role as the lead organizer of our legacy project and as a result, we have been able to continue the good work started by TCs last year without interruption. This project work of providing food and coats for student families in need has been facilitated through collaboration with fellow TCs, the contract teacher, the counseling department, Food Bank of the Rockies, the site team, students and parents.

Finally, Noah is a teacher leader in the classroom for his students. His CT has marveled at his ability to prepare and present meaningful and engaging learning opportunities for his students. He has developed strong teacher-student relationships through conveying a sense of respect for his learners as well as high expectations for their learning.

We feel very fortunate to have Noah as part of our Niver Creek team this fall.

Spotlights

Yau Jau Ku

Mr. Ku received the Mapleton Public Schools Award of Excellence in spring 2011 in the certified employee category. The category included our teaching staff, post-secondary options coordinators, mentor coaches, instructional guides and staff who support special needs in the School District. Each nominee represents the excellence and teacher leadership that provides quality learning opportunities for students each day. Nominees have contributed substantially to each student achieving his or her dreams in Mapleton Public Schools.

Mr. Ku’s nominators described him this way:

This teacher’s work during the school day is remarkable, but it is the work outside of the school day that is unprecedented. This teacher coordinates student and family activity nights that are fun, standards based and culturally rich. He has sought resources to fund amazing activities that touch and tie into all areas of learning. Finally, as a complement, this teacher teaches like his hair is on fire!

Kelly Parsons

What one notices immediately about Kelly Parsons is her bright smile and how she simply radiates positive energy. The students she has worked with during her UCTE internships at Rose Hill Elementary School have clearly thrived in the warm and caring classroom community she provides. And Kelly is clearly thriving as a TC. It is obvious that she loves teaching and loves her students. “As far back as I can remember, I have always loved working with kids. I decided to become a teacher when I was in elementary school. I had an amazing third and fourth grade teacher who was very supportive and fostered my love for learning.” Kelly has also been inspired and influenced by her mother, an elementary school art teacher.

Kelly not only brings a love for teaching and learning to her internships, but a strong work ethic. She works hard to plan and implement standards-based instruction that thoroughly engages students and gives them an opportunity to have fun and interact with each other. She is exceptionally creative in preparing meaningful hands-on materials and activities. For example, she recently taught a first grade math lesson on how to turn a word problem into a math sentence. She invested much time, thought, and effort in providing a variety of ways for wiggly first graders to get up and move and actually “act out” the problems, using props she had created.

As she gets ready to start the final phase of Internship III and work at Rose Hill Monday’s through Friday’s, Kelly reflects, “I have learned so much about myself through my internships. I have learned about perseverance, diligence, strength, and equality. I have also learned that I can be flexible and accommodating, so I can meet the needs of all of my students”. She recognizes the reciprocal nature of teaching, “I am not only teaching the kids, they are teaching me”.

Kelly is especially looking forward to implementing her Teacher Work Sample. She’ll be doing a writing unit, with an emphasis on health. Rose Hill is a wellness school, where making healthy choices about eating and exercise on a daily basis is encouraged. This happens to be a great passion of Kelly’s, “I feel that a healthy kid makes a healthy learner. Preparing for the TWS has been a long and rigorous process, but I’m anticipating teaching it with great excitement and high hopes.”

Looking towards her first year of teaching, Kelly says, “I can’t wait to have fun in my own classroom and to be a positive figure and mentor in the lives of my students. I can’t wait for the relationships, the laughter, the learning, the fun, and the discoveries I will share with my students.” Thank you, Kelly, for the laughter, the fun, the hard work, and the positive energy you’ve shared with us at Rose Hill. We know you you will have a stellar teaching career.

Job/Volunteer Opportunities

Seeking Volunteer to Help Son

I am looking for a college student who would like to volunteer hours or receive pay to help my son in school. He has an undefined learning disability – which has become more pronounced now that he is in fifth grade. He attends Jarrow Montessori in Boulder.

He has survived multiple traumas in his life including the death of his father, relinquishment of parental rights by his mother, and subsequent adoption into my family.

His behaviors are less severe now, and this school year his presenting issues are distraction and inability to focus in school.

If this seems like a situation for which a person in your graduate school would like to be of assistance, I would like to talk to them.

Thank you so much for your attention.

Important Information from Meredith Lopez, UCTE Academic Advisor:

Welcome back! And if this is your first semester with us, welcome to the School of Education & Human Development! I hope this edition finds you having a great start to your fall semester.

Office Calendar/Schedule

Please note that our main SSC office is now on official fall schedule and is open 8-5:30pm M-Thursday and 8-5pm Fridays. You can reach an Academic Advisor for appointments or questions by calling 303-315-4980 or emailing Meredith.lopez@ucdenver.edu.

Switch Week

For Internship I students, you will begin Internship II the week of Oct. 10th. During that week, you will have a break from classes before your next block starts, but are expected to be in internship.

In addition, on Tuesday Oct. 11, you will be coming to the 2nd Professional Learning Day at UCD that will be focused on deepening your understanding of community-based organizations and thinking about how you use that knowledge as a resource to further support students academically and socially.

For Internship III students, you will not begin your full 5 days a week portion of your internship until the week of October 24.

Don’t Forget Your New Email Account

As you may know, this summer ITS migrated student email from the @email.ucdenver.edu to a new @ucdenver.edu system using Microsoft’s Windows Live service.

Although students have been told they need to claim their new email account, many have not.

As a result, students who have not gone through the process to claim their new email account will not have access to any email sent to them from either eCollege or Blackboard.

To ensure that your students are receiving important email communication you might send, please encourage them to claim their new email accounts here.

Also, students who had previously set up email forward from their official university email accounts to some other address (such as Gmail) will have to re-establish those forwards. No email forwarding was migrated to the new system.

If you have questions about the email migration or about email in general, please contact the ITS help desk at: 303-724-4357

For inquires related to Blackboard and eCollege, please contact us!

CU Online Helpdesk, 303.315.3700, cuonlinehelp@ucdenver.edu

ID Cards

Student IDs and validation of current IDs (to obtain a semester sticker for city transportation) may be obtained in the Commuter Resource Center, Tivoli, room 269. Proof of tuition payment or class schedule (with your name and/or student ID# printed on the schedule) and a current picture ID are required.

Attention Special Education Teacher Candidates (on the job internship applications):

Please note the submission dates for each semester:

March 1st for Summer internships

May 1st for Fall internships

October 1st for Spring internships

Please contact Meredith Lopez in the Student Services Center if you need assistance in contacting your faculty advisor – meredith.lopez@ucdenver.edu

Spotlights

Thank you edWeb Teacher Leaders!

A big shout out to the PDS Teacher Candidates who attended the edWeb Training on Friday August 19. These leaders were trained in the capabilities and functions of the edWeb. Launching this platform includes building communities for each of the PDS Schools, training other members of their respective cohorts including Site Coordinators and Site Professors, maintaining a calendar of events, inviting their colleagues into the community and training them in how to navigate the edWeb platform and how to utilize the Document Library, the Chat Room, Discussion Forum as well as the blogs. Thank you Teacher Leaders. You are instrumental in moving online learning to the next level of use. It was an awesome training.

Congratulations to UCTE Faculty, Bud Talbot!

Bud has received official notification of award for the NSF Noyce grant to prepare future secondary science teachers. This will be a great springboard to launch us into building our science teacher education program.

Helen Polatsek-Holmes

Helen Polatsek-Holmes has begun her first year teaching fifth grade this fall at Cherry Drive Elementary. Helen was a teacher candidate who completed her internships at Cherry Drive last year, and we are honored to have Helen join our staff this year. With one week under her belt, she is already a teacher leader. Our staff has just started reading the book Understanding by Design as professional book study. Helen was able to share her experience and expertise with the Understanding by Design principles she learned in her pedagogy classes and implemented in her TWS. It was gratifying to see a first year teacher make a strong contribution to our professional discussion.

When I visited her in her classroom the second day of school everything was running smoothly. I asked if there was anything she needed and she replied, “No I feel completely prepared. Everything I learned at UCD has prepared me for this and I’m loving it” Of course, we both know there will be challenges ahead and times she will feel overwhelmed. However, I think it speaks volumes about the quality of the UCTE program and the competence of the Teacher Candidates that complete the program. Congratulations, Helen on a job well done! We wish you the very best in your career!

Welcome Parr to the Partnership!

I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how impressed we are with all of our Teacher Candidates. They have all jumped right in and are doing a fabulous job in the classrooms and with their teachers.

She will be recognized at the 2011 CCTM Conference in October.

Kirkegaard feels “extremely honored and blessed” to win this award. “I have pushed myself each year to learn more and become a better instructor in the classroom,” she said.

Mindful Reflection, by Dr. Barbara Dray

Sent to: Barbara Dray

I was looking through the CEC website for an article to read for another class and noticed your “Mindful Reflection” article in this month’s TEC edition. Congratulations! I just read it and think it is excellent. I will be recommending it to my classmates and plan to keep it in mind as I am working with students at my internship this semester. Figure 1 will be particularly helpful – I have printed it out to keep in my notebook and will refer to it often as I consider the actions of my students. I also found the differentiation between “description, interpretation and evaluation” on page 30 to be thought provoking. Finally, the tiny example of adding movement to the think pair share activity (p. 34) was so simple, yet powerful in validating one student’s learning style. Thanks for the great ideas!

Seeking Female Piano Teacher

I work for a local piano studio and we’re looking to hire a part-time piano teacher, someone with an education background or degree instead of a typical classical piano background.

We were thinking a college student or recent grad from the educational/child development world might be perfect, but we’re not sure how to reach out to schools like UC-Denver to let students and alumni know about the position.

Family in Littleton Seeking Care-Taker

My name is Sarah Jensen, I finished UCD’s IPTE program in December. I provided day care for three children (2nd, 3rd & 6th grade) while I was going through the Elementary Education Program last year but had to stop when I got my license and a full-time job. The family, based in Littleton, is looking for a new care-taker with no luck. The position is in the family’s Littleton home and would be after-school care, from 2:30PM until 6:00PM (possibly earlier). The family can pay $10/hour.

The children need someone who is caring and strong; they recently went through a traumatic loss of their father and the children are trying to navigate through elementary and middle school. The youngest child is struggling with reading and would benefit from reading support. If any TCs are interested in providing after-school care for these remarkable children, they can e-mail Natasha Phipps at: wheezybird@msn.com to hopefully set up an interview.

Thank You!

Hope Communities Seeking Site Coordinators and Tutors (Hiring by Current TC!)

I’m writing to see if you might be able to help me advertise some new job opportunities for college students.. This month I have received a promotion in my part-time job at Hope Communities, and now I am in charge of managing and hiring the Site Coordinators and Tutors for two after-school property locations this year. Last year, during my first year of the UCTE grad program, I was the Site Coordinator for Hidden Brook’s STRIVE Program (Students Turning Responsibility into Valuable Experience). I ran it after-school and all summer, and I was given the freedom to develop curriculum/activities/field trips on my own…which meant I took many of the wonderful things I learned in my classes and internship and used them to help students in my program! It’s a dream job for any student in the Urban Education department. The leadership, exposure to multiple cultures & languages, and the opportunity to gain classroom management skills while seeing students outside of the typical school setting are all aspects that have helped me grow immensely as a future teacher. STRIVE provides for 18+ students in grades 1-7 at each location, and many of the students are refugees from Burma, Thailand, India & Africa. All of the students at Hidden Brook attend Place Bridge Academy, which was amazing for me because my internship site was at Ryan Elementary in Jeffco, and they two populations are completely different…it really opened up my eyes to the wide variety of challenges/opportunities kids face.

Since I’m beginning year 2 of the UCTE program, I won’t be able to drive to Hidden Brook every day after school like I did last year. Instead I took a role in Hope’s office, based out of Five Points, and will be hiring all of the staff to be on-site instead of me. I will also be opening up the same program at one of our other properties, Elm Park. Both facilities provide low-income housing and free tutoring for residents. I was wondering if we could advertise these positions in your TC Newsfeed, and also have them posted to the job board of the Education Department if there is one. I would like quality students who want the responsibility of keeping the program running strong! I know many students in our program do not work because of the rigorous course work, but I believe it can be easily balanced as long as students are undergrads or in their first year of grad school.

On a final note, I was hoping to hire tutors and site coordinators as soon as possible. I’d like all applications to be turned in by the 14th, but if your newsfeed comes out after that I’d be happy to extend so people have a chance to apply. Please let me know if you have any additional questions/concerns, and if it is possible to advertise these positions. Thanks!

A couple of reminders from Meredith Lopez, UCTE Academic Advisor

Dear TC’s

I hope this edition finds you having a great start to your summer whether it be traveling, taking courses, or gearing up to start with us in the fall term. Please read below for some common questions for the beginning of the term and information to help you navigate your way through your program. Congrats to all those who have finished their licensure and/or educational masters programs! Welcome to those who will be just starting this fall and to those beginning their internships very soon in our Urban Community Teacher Education program.

Summer/Fall hours for Student Services Center-School of Education and Human Development

Our summer hours for the SSC will be 8-5pm. We are located at 1380 Lawrence Street, room 701. Once school begins on Aug. 22 we will be returning to our extended hours of 8-6pm. We will be closed on September 5, 2011 in observance of Labor Day.

Fall Academic Calendars

Make sure to be following both your internship site school calendar as well as UCD’s Academic Calendar for important dates. Also notify your instructors and site coordinator regarding any conflict in time/days where you will need to make up work. Follow your welcome email letter from the PDS will include important dates and links to schools’ calendars in order to plan for when to start internships. Academic classes for fall will begin August 22, 2011.

Fall Registration

Please make sure to be registered for your fall courses. Please log in to UCDAccess and familiarize yourself with this new system and don’t forget to check for “holds” and pay the $200 advanced tuition fee before registering. Please utilize the tutorials located within the portal if you have questions about navigation. For continuing summer students, overloads (over 18 credits) can be completed with the schedule adjustment form insert link and submitted to Meredith Lopez, academic advisor in the Student Services Center. If you have any questions about your schedule, please call or email Meredith.lopez@ucdenver.edu / 303-315-4980.

Once grades begin posting Aug. 10, either scan/email, fax (303-315-6311), or drop off the verification forms to me to sign so that I can email them back to you.

Remember, if you need a letter of support for teaching positions as you wait for licensure from CDE, please email Meredith.lopez@udenver.edu .

Important class information regarding Special Education fall courses

Currently SPED 5780 (Literacy Intervention) is listed as hybrid but will be online with a first meeting currently scheduled on the first Thursday of class to meet everyone face and face at the instructor’s request.

The system will not allow students to add SPED 5780 or other SPED Thursday night courses due to this one time meeting listed for SPED 5780 which causes a time conflict.

However, by filling out a schedule adjustment form and returning to the advisor Meredith Lopez by scan/email or fax, and we can easily do an override and allow students to add other SPED courses or SPED 5780 that may fall on the Thursday night schedule.

Students who enroll in SPED 5780 will be contacted via the instructor on another alternative time to meet face to face with the instructor prior to the beginning of the online learning.

Please fill out Part I of the SAF and I will take care of the rest to add the needed SPED course to your schedule.

IMPORTANT EMAIL INFORMATION

All students should have received this information already. If you have not read this information, please do so immediately!

Dear University of Colorado Denver Student,

Beginning July 11, 2011, the University of Colorado Denver is upgrading to a new student email service. This service is part of MicroSoft’s “Cloud” concept. Please go to http://ucdenver.edu/email and click on “Downtown Campus Students” to learn about the transition.

Benefits to students include:

Assigned student email accounts – @ucdenver.edu — will remain active for life

10 gigabytes of email storage and 25 gigabytes of free online storage

Automated password-recovery capabilities

For many students, their new account may appear to simply drop the @email designation

Action students must take by August 1, 2011:

All students must activate their new university-issued email account at https://myaccount.ucdenver.edu/.

Activation is easy and only takes a few minutes.

During the activation process, students will be asked for information verifying their identity, and students will be asked to self-select five security questions enabling future changes to passwords.

Effective August 1, 2011, students will be required to use their new student email to access records and course registration in the Integrated Student Information System (ISIS) and the Blackboard Learning Management System

What about forwarding:

To ensure students receive messages to their university-issued email, beginning August 1, all incoming email automatically will forward from students’ current@email.ucdenver.edu address to the students’ new@ucdenver.edu account. For students who have forwarded their university account to a non-university account, any existing forwarding rules set by students in their university-issued email will be reset for their new@ucdenver.edu account. Students wanting to forward their university account to a personal account (such as gmail, aol, me, etc.) can do so by setting up forwarding in the new LIVE@EDU system. Instructions on how to do so are at http://ucdenver.edu/email; click on “Downtown Campus Students.”

What happens to saved email:

Students will have until October 1, 2011 to move emails stored in their @email.ucdenver.edu mailbox to the new @ucdenver.edu address using a simple tool provided in the upgraded email service. No action is required if students do not wish to move old email to the new mailbox.

Still have questions:

Please see the overview of this transition project at: http://www.ucdenver.edu/email and click on “Downtown Campus Students” or please call the University of Colorado Denver IT Services Help Desk at 303-724-HELP (303-724-4357) and a technician will assist you.

Seeking Nanny

We are looking for an afternoon nanny starting Monday, August 22, 2011. We live in the DTC area. We have four children between the ages of five and ten. The prospective candidate would be helping out Mondays through Thursdays from about 3 or 3:30 to about 6 or 7 (will vary from day to day with children’s sports, etc. schedule). Basic duties would include:

Picking the children up from school and driving them to various extracurricular activities. In other words, an experienced driver with a good driving record and who is comfortable driving a minivan or the like is required.

Preparing snacks for children and encouraging them to do their homework.

If the children are done with their homework, engaging them in reading and other activities.

Light housework – children’s laundry and occasional cleanup of children’s things.

Should the candidate already have availability during the week of August 15th to 18th during the day, it would be helpful to have help throughout those days, as the children do not start school until the 22nd. Most importantly, we would like the prospective candidate to have a positive attitude, patience with children, enjoy spending time with children, to have a good intuition as far as handling situations with multiple children (i.e., experience in childcare), and an interest in engaging children and supporting and encouraging their academic and personal growth.

I can be contacted at marinaheusch@yahoo.com or 303-773-3997.

TA Saturday Academy Program -Central Colorado Area Health Education Center

We are looking for someone (not necessarily a teacher) perhaps a TA, who can help to facilitate our Saturday Academy program. It would be best if this person had experience facilitating learning experiences. Our 4 goals for the program are:

Support and encouragement for the Denver Metro Science Fair project- (hypothesis, and research methods)

ACT Prep Kaplan course

Academic enrichment- bioscience class, chemistry, math

Continued health career exploration- ICAP & health career engagement plan.

We meet for 8-10 Saturdays during the fall semester, and another 8-10 during the spring semester.

We are uncertain of our funding situation currently, but are willing to work with individuals on salary requirements.

We will also have a teacher or two for the actual academic enrichment, as well as some support mentors. This “facilitator” will be the one sort of in charge of making things happen, tying all of the curriculum and experiences together for complete interconnectedness. The first semester will have a heavy focus on the science fair project, and the second will have a heavy focus on the ACT prep.

Ideal candidates have a science background, and are informed or interested in health careers.

The students are 10th graders interested in becoming health care professionals. All sessions will take place on the Anschutz Medical Campus- mostly Saturdays 9-3:30pm.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Available Scholarship!

Janice Jones Scholarships for Prospective Teachers

The American Association for Employment in Education (AAEE), an organization which promotes professional standards and practices in teacher preparation and job recruitment, recognizes that a.) there is a shortage of college students from racial/ethnic minority groups preparing for careers in teaching, and b.) there is a shortage of candidates preparing for careers in certain teaching fields, for example physics and mathematics. This scholarship program is designed to address these special needs. Only students from colleges holding membership in AAEE are eligible to participate. UCD is a participating member.

Application Procedures

Applications will be available through the AAEE college representatives; the AAEE college reps will also distribute guidelines and applications to key people on their campuses beginning in June 2011. Applications and official transcripts will be due postmarked by the October 1, 2011 deadline, and forwarded to the AAEE Scholarship Committee through the Director of Awards and Recognitions. The Scholarship Committee will make recommendations (including alternates) to the AAEE Executive Board prior to its annual Fall meeting. Recipients will be informed of their status and awarded monies during the Spring semester 2012.

Job/Volunteer Opportunities

DPS Seeking Math Tutors

DPS is looking for approximately 100 qualified math tutors to provide math support to students in new schools in the Far Northeast, in an effort to accelerate student growth. This math support will come in the form of free, ongoing math tutoring through a partnership between DPS and the Denver Summit Schools Math Fellows. This tutoring program will begin in the 2011-12 school year and will provide students with daily math tutoring that will be built into the regular school day.

Math tutors will work with students beginning mid-July, for a one-year fellowship offered directly through DPS. Those hired receive a salary of $21,000, with the opportunity to earn an additional performance-based incentive of $4,000. Serving as a math tutor provides an excellent opportunity for those committed to increasing student achievement. DPS is committed to providing access to high-quality education, and the Math Fellows program is just one of the key turnaround strategies being employed.

To become a tutor (Math Fellow), candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, possess strong math skills, and make a commitment of 10.5 months. To learn more about this fellowship opportunity, please visit www.denvermathfellows.org.

We know that some of our strongest candidates come in the form of referrals from people like you, who are already committed to the students in DPS and understand the importance of this work. If you know of anyone who may be a great candidate, please pass along this information.

Seeking Volunteers for Summer Camp in July

I work with a non-profit organization that is in need of a few volunteers in July for summer camp, so I thought I would see if you are able to funnel anyone our way.

The organization is called Metro Denver Promotion of Letters and we are running two, week-long summer camps in July (during the weeks of the 11th and the 25th) for students aged 11-15 and 8-11. We will be meeting primarily at the UCD writing center on Auraria Campus and taking field trips around Denver. Our days are M-F, 9-5.

The responsibilities are pretty light, and the volunteers don’t have to be “good” writers, but we will want them to like kids and be willing to do some writing with them.

If interested – please email me!

Best,
